Mr. Dittmer was a member of St. John United Church of Christ at Florence and in his earlier years at Lake Creek United Methodist Church, where his family owned one of the original cabins on the Lake Creek Camp ground, where he attended all his life.
He was a farmer all of his life, row crop and raising cattle and hogs on a farm his grandfather Rages had in the family for over 100 years. He gave credit of his raising good cattle to Leo Smith of Otterville and the Hinkhouse family. He attended grade school at Black Jack School in Florence and Smithton High School.
He was a member of the Cattleman Association, he was a Board of Director for 30 years for Central Missouri Bank, fourteen years on the Central Missouri Electric Co-op Board. He was a member of Sedalia Lodge #236 AF&AM and was a Past Master.
Survivors include a step daughter, Barbara Ann Tieman, of Syracuse, a step granddaughter, Vida Lou Phillips and her husband Bob; four step great grandchildren, Preston Phillips, Quenton Phillips, Trenton Phillips and Bobbi Jo Hagerman and her husband Cory; two step great great grandchildren, Madalyn Jo Hagerman and Grace Marie Phillips; four nephews Dale and Philip Monsees and David and Richard Dittmer.
He was predeceased by a brother, Carl Dittmer and a sister, Martha Monsees.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Heckart Funeral Home with Pastor Gene Page officiating.
Pallbearers will be Preston Phillips, Quenton Phillips, Trenton Phillips, Cory Hagerman, Tracy Monsees and Kevin Dittmer.
Honorary bearers will be Matt Green, Arthur Fry, Reno Viebrock, Gail Demand, Shelby Siegel and Dr. Donald Eldenberg.
Burial will be in Smithton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Sedalia Lodge #236 AF&AM will conduct Masonic services at 8:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Lake Creek United Methodist Church or to St. John’s United Church of Christ.
Lester Norman Dittmer, 88 of Smithton, died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at the Golden Age Living Center, in Stover, MO.
He was born September 13, 1919, between Florence and Smithton, in the Black Jack Community. He was the son of August and Laura Rages Dittmer. On August 7, 1965 he was married to Louella L. Mertgen, who survives.
