Mrs. Smith was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. She was a 1927 graduate of Smith-Cotton High School and attended Sedalia Business College. She worked as a grocery clerk for Bing’s, Welch’s and Pirtle - Evans retiring in 1996 at the age of 87. She loved her flowers, playing cards, quilting and sewing. She had lived in Sedalia most of her life.

Survivors include two sons, Harold Lee Smith and his wife Dorothy, of Centralia and James Ernest Smith and his wife Ranae, of Sedalia; five grandchildren, LeeAnn Kempker, Lee Allen Smith, Scott Smith, Jammi Birch, and James Smith; eight great grandchildren and three step great grandchildren; three nieces and three nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn Gillespie and Dorothy  Van Arsdale; a brother, Edward Gillespie.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2008, at Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Michael Lockhart officiating.

Pallbearers will be Lee Allen Smith, Dylan Kempker, Fred Meyer, Colter Stevens, James Smith, and Gregory Hedberg. Honorary bearer will be Michael Birch

Virginia Ann Smith, 99, of Sedalia, died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

She was born April 25, 1909, near Longwood, Missouri, a daughter of Walter Crockett and Eunice Bouldin Gillespie. On May 17, 1932, in Warrensburg, she married James Harold Smith, who died June 10, 1956.
