Thomas Samuel Cooper, born on December 31, 1916, in Marengo, Iowa, died peacefully at the Good Samaritan Home in Cole Camp, on June 9, 2012. Tom, a graduate of Smith Cotton High School, married Esther Nell Stevens in 1941, and they made their home in Sedalia throughout their lives.

Esther preceded Tom in death in 2002. Tom’s sister Catherine Louise Miller and brother Joseph Woodsmall Cooper also preceded him in death. He is survived by daughter Scarlett Cooper Pirtle and husband Shelby of Boonville, son Thomas Kevin Cooper and wife Joy of Sedalia, and son Joseph Dewey Cooper and wife Debbie of Springfield. Also surviving are six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Tom had an active life. He and Esther traveled extensively throughout the United States and the world. They were members of the First Christian Church where Tom served as a deacon, an elder, a board member, and a Sunday school teacher. Before his death, Tom had belonged to the First Christian Church longer than any other member. Both Tom and Esther enjoyed dancing and sporting events throughout their marriage.  Additionally, he was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. Although retired thirty years, Tom had been employed by Midwest Biscuit Company during most of his working years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund or Piney Woods School.

A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 11:00, with visitation from 10:00 to 11:00. Interment will be at Highland Sacred Gardens following the service.

Honorary bearers will be grandchildren, Kody Cooper, Delanie Cooper, Abbey Hart, Molly Bradley, Sean Pirtle and Seth Pirtle.
