Donald A. Nelson, 79, of Green Ridge, died Monday morning, Jan. 19, 2009, at his home.
He was born May 5, 1929, in Wausa, Nebraska, a son of George G. and Vera Roads Nelson. On Jan. 27, 1961, in Kansas City, Missouri, he was married to Leno B. Myers, who survives of the home.
Mr. Nelson was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church. He was an electrical engineer for IBM, retiring in 1984 after more than 29 years of service. He enjoyed antique John Deere tractors, fishing, hunting, and investing. He was a member of the American Legion for 33 years. He was a 1947 graduate of Smithton High School and completed a Dale Carnegie business course. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard L. Nelson, and his wife, Dr. Deanna L., of Green Ridge; a step-daughter, Judy Ann Hays, of Belton; two grandchildren, Robert Loren and Reed Lynn; two sisters, Elaine Starke, of Sedalia, and Doris Aregent, of Kansas City, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, Kenneth Nelson.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bob Wasson officiating.
Casket bearers will be Robbie Nelson, Reed Nelson, Steve Starke, Joe Carr, David Starke and Bill Imhauser.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors by VFW Post 2591.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
