Dale Edward “Ed” Spiess, 81, of Sedalia, died Saturday, January 5, 2008, at his home.

He was born June 26, 1926, in Mansfield, Ohio, a son of Edward Henry and Laura Almend Spiess. On June 10, 1951, in Miami, Okla., he was married to Nelle Marie
McCullough, who died Aug. 7, 2006.

Mr. Spiess was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He owned several local
businesses, including Ed’s Pet Shop, Ed’s Fina and Ed’s Standard Station, before retiring in the mid-1980s. He enjoyed bowling in various leagues, working jigsaw puzzles, arrowhead hunting and collecting, antique tractors and doing custom hay bailing. He belonged to several coffee groups.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and later served in the Army Air Corps
and the Air Force, serving a total of twenty years.

Surviving are three sons, Dale E. Spiess Jr., and his wife, Anne, of Wakarusa, Kan.,
David L. Spiess, and his wife, Pat, of Sedalia, and Gary A. Spiess, and his wife, Debra, of South Bend, Ind.; a daughter, Joyce Spiess, and her husband, Gary Williams, of Sedalia; and nine grandchildren, Jeff Colvin, Justin Caton, Lauren Rose, Nick Spiess, Jennifer Spiess, Erica Ortega, Kaitlin Spiess, Emma Spiess and Isabelle Spiess; and four great grandchildren. He was also predeceased by a brother, Lawrence “Bud” Spiess; and two sisters, Margaret Daniels and Eileen Henry.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ted Francis officiating.

Pallbearers will be Gary Spiess, Jeff Colvin, Justin Caton, Byron Smith, Dean Vaughn and Danny Kabler.

Burial will be in Highland Sacred Gardens, with military rites conducted.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
