Estill Clarence "Doc" Hughes, 89, of Sedalia, died Thursday evening, July 3, 2003, at the Rest Haven Convalescent Home.
He was born November 30, 1913, in Houstonia, Missouri, son of James Walter and Sadie Lee Hayes Hughes. On May 25, 1935, in Sedalia, Missouri he married Pearl Mae Craig, who died April 5, 2000.
Mr. Hughes was employed with Missouri Pacific Railroad as a laborer in 1938, retiring in 1973 as Roadmaster of the Missouri Pacific Railroad Kansas City yards. In the early 1930's he served with Civilian Conservation Corps near Salem, MO. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, spending time with family and he always had a strong work ethic. He lived most of his life in the Sedalia area.
Survivors include three sons, Bob Hughes of Sedalia, Don Hughes of Overland Park, Kansas, and Harold L. Hughes of Independence; 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and a great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Hughes; a daughter in law, Karen Hughes; three brothers; three sisters; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2003 at the Crown Hill Cemetery with E. Fred Biggs officiating.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Greg Hughes, David Hughes, Brandon Hughes, Alan Smith, Brent Frisbie and Dane Frisbie.
Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 6 at the Heckart/Gillespie Funeral Home, where friends may call until 4:00 p.m. Saturday and after noon on Sunday at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or to the donor's choice.
