Louis Kahrs “Bud” Demand, 82, of Smithton, died Sunday, March 25, 2007, at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia.

He was born Nov. 5, 1924, in Smithton, a son of Roy L. and Eva Kahrs Demand. On Dec. 25, 1943, in

Sedalia, he was married to Dorothy A. Ulmer, who survives of the home and farm.

Mr. Demand was a member of Lake Creek United Methodist Church, where his family owned one of the original cabins of the Lake Creek Camp Grounds. He was a foreman for Tempel-Callison Construction Co.

He enjoyed playing cards and horseshoes with his family and friends. He loved his prize Angus bull, OJ, and his dog, Ranger. In his youth, he was an accomplished athlete in baseball and basketball. In later years, he was an avid fan of almost all sports on television.

After graduating from Smithton High School, he served in the Army as a military policeman. He later made a living as a skilled carpenter. But, his roots were always on the farm that has proudly been in his family for well over 100 years.

Everyone who knew him knows what a hard worker he has been all of his life, always ready to provide for those around him.

His dream for retirement was to be able to look out the window of his living room and see a few head of cattle, and to drive his tractor up west to see the rest of his herd. He enjoyed his dream for many years.

All who knew him and loved him appreciated his wit and sense of humor. As you think of him in the future, as we all will, remember the good times and know he misses you, too, because “that’s the way the world is fixed.”

Also surviving are two daughters, Donna Lou Gary, and her husband, Jeff, of Smithton, and Diann Gayle Gordon, and her husband, Tom, of Sedalia; a son, Leslie Dean Demand, of Smithton; five grandchildren, Todd LaBille, Jared LaBille, Justin Demand, Dara Wood and Jordon Hamby; five great grandchildren and two on the way.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Vivian Neff and Ruth Montgomery; and an infant son, Robert Allen Demand.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at Heckart/Gillespie Colonial Chapel, with Pastor Dan Page and the Rev. Jorge Arvelo officiating.

Pallbearers will be Lt. Col. Todd LaBille, Jared LaBille, Justin Demand, Mike Wood, Gail Demand, Jeff Gary and Tom Gordon.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph and Darlene Thomas, Dara Wood, Jordon Hamby, Dan and Deanna Neff, Dale and Carolyn Montgomery, Sylvan and Karen Demand, Josh Gary and Linda Monsees.

Burial will be in Lake Creek Cemetery, with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2591.

The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, Bud would appreciate donations to the Lake Creek Cemetery fund.
