Mr. Schoen was a member of Parkview Christian Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2591. He was a Private First Class in the Army during the Korean War, serving from 1951 to 1953. He received an occupation medal for service in Germany. He was a graduate of Pilot Grove High School.
Joe was a self-employed farmer and carpenter. He built numerous houses, and designed, built and flew his own airplane. He was very musically talented, playing guitar, piano, harmonica, violin and fiddle, and loved to sing. He belonged to a pickin-and-grinnin’ group. He also enjoyed dancing and playing cards. He wrote articles for Full Cry, a coon hunting magazine.
Also surviving are four sons, Herb Schoen, and his companion, Traci Castle, and Randy Schoen, and his wife, Tammy, all of Otterville, James Schoen, and his wife, Lisa, of Sedalia, and Rick Schoen, and his wife, Brenda, of St. Joseph; two daughters, Sheila Sanders, of Otterville, and Becky Schoen, of Las Vegas; three stepsons, Danny Hawkins, Allen Hawkins, both of Sedalia, and Jimmy Hawkins, of Cape Girardeau; a stepdaughter, Merry Schlobohm, of La Monte; a brother, Amandus Schoen, of Tipton; two sisters, Levina Reuter, of Pilot Grove, and Annalean Romig, of Syracuse; 13 grandchildren, Stacy Schoen, Adam Schoen, Justin Schoen, Tori Schoen, Natalie Schoen, Aaron Schoen, Alyssa Schoen, Kevin Sanders, Kurt Sanders, Hope Sands, Jessica Sands,
Logan Schoen and Derek Schoen; eight stepgrandchildren, Brittany Mors, Andrew Beavers, Megan Beavers, Becky Goff, Memory Hawkins, Charles Matthew Schlobohm, Sabrina Hawkins and Merri Elizabeth Schlobohm; and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Jerome, in infancy.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 22, 2006, at Parkview Christian Church, with the Rev. Rodney Brown officiating.
Pallbearers will be Bob Ruckman, Fred Masterson, Paul Oswald, Larry Turner, Floyd Hill and Bud Vinson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2591 Honor Guard.
Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Otterville, with military honors by VFW Post 2591.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2006, at Heckart/Gillespie Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Bothwell Hospice or Parkview Christian Church.
Januarius Herbert “Joe” Schoen, 77, of Otterville, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at his home.
He was born Jan. 25, 1928, in Pilot Grove, a son of Rudolph and Mary Gerke Schoen. He was married to Patricia Bagwill, and later Marjorie Wells, who died Dec. 6, 1998. On July 18, 1999, in Otterville, he was married to Norma Louise Scott, who survives of the home.
