Elsie Elizabeth Smethers, 91, died Wednesday morning, November 25, 2009 at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

She was born September 16, 1918 in Sedalia, a daughter of Edward Peter and Cora Elizabeth  Cassaday Harms. On December 5, 1943, in Sedalia, she married George Edward Smethers , who died July 1, 1964.

Mrs. Smethers worked at Archias Seed Store and was a cook at Whittier School. She was a member of the East Sedalia Baptist Church, Bothwell Hospital Auxiliary, Red Cross Volunteer, Rebekah Lodge, AARP, Jolly Elders   and ABWA . She was a Salvation Army Bell Ringer and was an election poll worker. Mrs. Smethers liked to make quilts, crochet, yard work and gardening.

Survivors include a son, Dennis G. Smethers and wife Pamela, Green Ridge; a daughter Kathy Lelia and husband, James Heim, Warsaw, five granddaughters, Julie Abney, Denise Warner, Jessica Smethers, Kimberly Heller and Leslie Tuter;  11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorena Sprinkles, Sedalia and Charles Wise who she took care of when he was young. She was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Harms, four sisters, Hazel Reed, Ruby Richwine, Helen McPherson and Betty Lemens.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Heckart Funeral Home with Rev. Ray McDonald officiating.

Casket bearers will be Charles Wise, Monty McPherson, Larry Richwine, Stanley Harms, Beryl McCoy, Robert Sanders and Kenny McPherson. Nieces and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Burial will be in Highland Sacred Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:30- 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to East Sedalia Baptist Church.
