Charles William (Charlie) Smith, 94, of Sedalia, died Monday, May 3, 2004 at Fair View Nursing Home.

He was born June 21, 1909, in Windsor, Missouri, son of Walter Levi and Sarah Margaret Gordon Smith. On October 16, 1929, in Sedalia, Missouri, he married Mary A. Nichols, who died May 23, 1996.




Mr. Smith was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, 50 year member of Granite Lodge #272 A.F. and A.M., Scottish Rite Mason, 50 year member and Past Worthy Patron of Sedalia Chapter #57 Order of the Eastern Star, and 50 year member of the Ararat Shrine. He had worked for Union Pacific and Missouri Pacific Railroads, working as an Apprentice Instructor, Round House Foreman, Assistant Superintendent and later Superintendent of the Reclaim Department.

Survivors include a son, Charles R. Smith, of Sedalia; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and a great great grandson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alice Wagner; and three brothers, Walter Ira Smith, James Harold Smith and Perry Lee Smith.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Frederick Zahn officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no formal visitation however friends may call after noon on Tuesday and until 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Heckart/Gillespie Funeral Home.

The family suggests contributions to Wesley United Methodist Church.
