Mr. Ulmer was raised in Sedalia and lived in Denver, Colorado for a while when he was young. He eventually returned to Sedalia to make his home. Billy joined the military when he was seventeen and proudly served his country in three branches of service which included the Army, Navy (Sea Bees) and the Navy Air Force. He was a man with many talents who could do just about anything. After leaving the military, he worked most of his life as a carpenter and truck driver. He enjoyed cooking for his family and friends and took great pride in his garden and flowers which he planted every year. He was a meticulous craftsman and handyman who embraced challenges, whether it be a mailbox, doghouse, birdhouse, bookcase or even a lamp stand. He enjoyed fishing and eating out with his family at Ryan’s. He was a member of Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 2591.
Also surviving are two daughters, Toni Myers, and her husband, Michael, of Leeton, and Linda Griffin, of Windsor; two sons, Rick Ulmer, and his wife, Kim, of Gardner, Kan., and David Ulmer, and his wife, Michele, of Sedalia; a brother, Russell Ulmer, of Sedalia; a sister, Helen Lewis, of Sedalia; six grandchildren, Melissa Myers, Tonya Griffin, Twila Christopher, Billy James Muir, Elizabeth Ulmer and Lauren Ulmer; and two great grandchildren, Mikey Myers and Sierra Christopher. He was predeceased by his parents; two sons, Stephen Earnest Ulmer and Thomas Andrew Ulmer; a grandson, Skip Griffin; and two great grandchildren, Zachary Oakes and Jacob Oakes.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Heckart/Gillespie Colonial Chapel, with
the Rev. Bruce Campbell officiating. Pallbearers will be Lawrence Lee Ulmer, Paul Christopher, Shawn Kanak and members of VFW honor guard. Michael K. Smith will be an honorary pallbearer.
Burial will be in Highland Sacred Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral
home.
Billy Richard Ulmer, 78, of Sedalia, died Monday, June 12, 2006, at University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics in Columbia.
He was born May 9, 1928, in Sedalia, a son of Edgar Ernest and Rosye Jane Klein Ulmer. On Dec. 19, 1953, in Sedalia, he was married to Lillian Mae Marquess, who survives of the home.
