was married to Norma Winters, who survives of the home.
He was a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church, charter member of the Sunset Optimist Club, having served as its first President, Sedalia Jaycees, and a past member of the Sedalia Country Club.
He was raised and educated in Sedalia, graduating from Smith-Cotton High School in 1948 where he played football. He spent 2 years in the Army, serving during the Korean War. For over 20 years, he was a driver sales manager for Taystee Bread. Joe was very active in youth sports in Sedalia, having coached Little League Baseball, Khoury League Soccer, the original Sedalia Junior Football League which he founded in 1969, and also served as a commissioner for Ban Johnson Baseball. Joe enjoyed taking tour trips by bus and watching his grandson play baseball.
Joe was always known as a cook and someone who loved catering for many. He started the Wednesday night fellowship dinners at Broadway Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Cindy Wood and her husband Rodney of rural Warsaw, a son, Jim and his wife Susan, of Sedalia, three stepsons, Rick Winters of Kearney, Missouri, Alan Winters of Holden, Missouri, Dean Winters of Branson, Missouri, a granddaughter Stephanie Van Horn of San Antonio, Texas, a grandson, Christopher "Chip" Van Horn of Houston, Texas, and several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Van Horn.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 5, 2009, at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Nancy Carle officiating. Pallbearers will be Mike Hawk, Donnie Brownfield, Matt Hageman, Alan Winters, Mike Cowen, and Warren Schroeder.
The family will receive friends Thursday, February 5, beginning at 9:30 am until the time of the service. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Liberty Park Stadium Fund or Twin Lakes Hospice of Clinton, Mo.
